The Research Paper

The vast majority of students who are college bound are going to be required to write at least one research paper in high school and many will need to write research papers in college and graduate school, as well. Many schools teach students how to study and the basic of writing a research paper. However, in order to excel in school it is important to understand how to write an excellent research paper.

Planning to Write a Research Paper

When you sit down and think about how to write a research paper, the first thing that you need to do is to come up with a topic. Your instructor might give you a list of topics from which to choose or you might be able to write about anything that is consistent with the course which you are taking. It is important to take some time to carefully develop your topic. You want it to be narrow enough that you can thoroughly research it within the page parameters of the assignment. Yet, you want it to be broad enough that you will be able to easily find the information when you begin your research.

Researching Research Papers

After you think of your topic, it is useful to make a list of potential sources of information. For example, you might want to think about whether you will interview people, do internet research, research legal cases, read magazine articles or examine medical studies. If you are writing a high school term paper or a college research report then you want to be sure that you use a variety of sources when writing your paper.

As you conduct your research, it is important that you take notes and begin to put pieces of information together into an outline. That way you will have a detailed plan to follow when you begin to write your paper.

Writing Research Papers

Every student and every writer has his or her own way of writing a paper. Some people prefer to carefully craft every sentence into its final form. Other writers prefer to write quickly and get their ideas down on paper and then to go back and edit those ideas. There is no right or wrong way to write a paper so long as the finished result is a well thought out, well researched and well written product.

Ethics of Writing a Research Paper

It is important that you keep careful notes about where you got the information that you are putting into your paper and that you accurately and thoroughly cite any research information. If you fail to do so, you may be guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism is grounds for expulsion at many colleges and can forever taint your academic and professional career.

There have always been ways around writing a research paper. However, with the popularity of the internet it is now easier than ever to find a research paper for sale. Many students are tempted to purchase a paper and to avoid doing the work themselves. However, there is no benefit and there is a great risk associated with doing this.

While the purchased research paper might earn you an A in the class, you have not gained the knowledge that the assignment was supposed to provide. If you are a high school student then you will not be well prepared for the next course. If you are a college student then you have cheated nobody but yourself since you are paying for the privilege of taking the course in the first place.
Further, if your teacher or an administrator discovers that you have bought a research paper for sale then will certainly get an F for the assignment, you will likely fail the course and you may even be expelled, thereby hurting your chances of getting a degree and getting the job of your choice. It hardly seems worth it to avoid writing a research paper given the potential consequences.

A high school term paper or a college research report might seem like an overwhelming task that is not important to ones future. However, both the research and the writing of research papers are important to the learning process and to a students future. Therefore, it is important for studentsto think about each research paper and to do the very best job they can on it.
